History
Williams Middle School, named after the award-winning Dr. Willie Lee Williams, is located on the north edge of the historic district of downtown Florence, South Carolina. Williams proudly serves over seven hundred students in seventh and eighth grades. Dr. Williams was a graduate of Shaw University and Meharry Medical College, and he practiced medicine in Florence, South Carolina for over fifty years. Dr. Williams was always a strong advocate of equality and excellence in education for students and believed that all students were capable of learning. It was his philosophy that a rigorous core curriculum was the best way to prepare students to become productive citizens. His leadership enhanced, enriched, and engaged citizens, and he was recognized at large for his Civic and Humanitarian efforts. The Dr. Willie Lee Williams French Award was earned by a Williams Middle School student who excelled in French for a number of years. We consider it a privilege to honor Dr. Williams for his efforts year after year.
Williams Middle School is committed to providing students with a comprehensive foundation of knowledge and skills across the content areas that include an extensive art program that will propel them as they matriculate into high school and college. Our commitment encompasses a laser focus on high-quality learning experiences and support for the social, emotional, and mental development of our students. Our International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program provides an opportunity for students to engage in a rigorous international curriculum that inspires intellectual inquisitiveness and a love of learning.
Williams Middle School students received the Gold Award for national achievement on the 2021 National German Exam and received the three highest scores in the state of South Carolina. Students are exposed to a multitude of fields ranging from STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) to foreign cultures. Williams students have the opportunity to enroll in courses such as Medical Detectives, Design and Modeling, Robotics, and Flight and Space through Project Lead the Way. Williams provides the opportunity for students to choose from several arts courses including Orchestra, Band, Dance, Art, Chorus, and Visual Arts. Students are also able to participate and serve the school community by joining a variety of clubs that include Yearbook, Battle of the Books, Dance, and our award winning Beta Club and Academic Challenge Team. We encourage students to turn their passions into purpose. Since the 2018-2019 school year, the infusion of technology in teaching and learning is supported by the successful completion of our district wide 1:1 initiative which provides digital devices for every student. Williams Middle School is proud to have a caring community of dedicated alumni, a thriving International Baccalaureate program, STEAM initiatives, competitive athletics, and dedicated teachers and staff.
At Williams Middle School, we endeavor to create a student-centered environment for our future graduates as they strive for excellence and prepare to become innovative world leaders. Our motto is, “Excellence Is Our Standard”.

How can I enroll a student in the SBTP?
To enroll a student in the SBTP, a parent/legal guardian must complete and return the Parental Consent Forms to the child’s school.
If you are interested in enrolling or would like more information, please email our District Nurse, Beth Holzbach, at bholzbach@fsd1.org.
Is it mandatory for students to enroll in the SBTP?
Enrolling in the SBHC is NOT mandatory; however, it is strongly encouraged so that students may have access to quality comprehensive health care for diagnosis and treatment of illnesses such as
cough/cold, sore throat, pink eye, rashes, allergies, respiratory infections, ear infections, flu, bronchitis, and other low-acuity illnesses.
What type of care can my child receive in the SBTP?
What type of care can my child receive in the SBTP?
If your child is enrolled in the SBTP, he or she will receive the same care that they would get at the doctor's office. The SBTP can manage a student's illness or minor injury at the school; thus decreasing absenteeism from school. The SBTP will NOT provide care to students without the knowledge and consent of the parent/legal guardian. If the parent desires to join the visit, they can request an email link with the appointment time and video connection instructions.
Will the student receive a prescription medication?
Some conditions can be treated with over-the-counter medication; others require a more robust treatment plan requiring a prescription. Depending upon the provider’s assessment, the student may or may not receive a prescription. If the provider determines the treatment plan requires a prescribed medication, the prescription will be electronically sent to the local pharmacy of choice.
Is there a cost to participate in the SBTP?
Is a student required to have health insurance to be seen at the SBTP?
The program does not require any upfront costs from parents/legal guardians. If the student’s insurance has a co-pay, the parent/legal guardian may be responsible for the co-pay amount and the provider will bill the insurance company just like a typical primary care doctor’s visit. If you do not have insurance, you will be billed for the cost of the visit.
What if the student already has a doctor?
Can students from other schools access care from the SBTP?
Will the equipment allow the provider to adequately diagnose the student?
YES! The provider has video equipment in their office, allowing them to see your child through a high-definition camera and state-of-the-art equipment. The equipment used on the student’s side has multiple attachments that allow the provider to see inside the child's ear and mouth, increase the zoom to see rashes, and get key vital readings in real time.
